May Her Soul Rest In Peace

Age 94

Sister Marie Anne La Russo, SC

Sister Marie Anne La Russo (Sister Miriam Michael) was born on November 19, 1919 in Manhattan. She was one of four daughters and three sons born to Gerard and Maria Schiraldi La Russo. Marie attended Epiphany School and Cathedral High School, and then worked for four years before entering the Sisters of Charity of New York on September 8, 1941. Sister Michael received a BA in History from the College of Mount Saint Vincent and an MA in Education and Guidance from Fordham University. Sister also pursued further study at Manhattan College as well earning NYS permanent certification in Elementary and Special Education.

Sister Michael spent many years teaching elementary school and taught every grade from first to eighth. After professing vows, she spent several months at Epiphany School in Manhattan before being missioned to Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, also in Manhattan. Sister Michael spent five years at St. Mary's in Wappingers Falls and five more at Blessed Sacrament on Staten Island. From 1964 through 1967 she taught at Sts. Peter and Paul School and St. Barnabas School, both in the Bronx. Sister Marie Anne then returned to Staten Island where she taught at Our Lady Star of the Sea until 1984, and then moved to St. Bernard's School in Manhattan where she remained until her "retirement."

Sister Marie spent forty-four years in the ministry of teaching. She loved this ministry and was happy as a teacher because she felt the love of her students and always "tried to give love as Jesus did." She continued to hear from many of her students, which made her feel that she was able to "joyfully spread Jesus' message" to all the people she encountered in her ministry. She remained active in her retirement, always displaying thoughtfulness, caring and patience with those she encountered.

We rejoice with her now as she enters the peace and joy of God's Kingdom and is reunited with her loving God, her family and all of the Sisters of Charity who have gone before her. Rest in the peace of your loving Savior, Sister Marie!
