Sister Marie Anne La Russo, SC
Sister Marie Anne La Russo (Sister
Miriam Michael) was born on November 19,
1919 in Manhattan. She was one of four
daughters and three sons born to Gerard
and Maria Schiraldi La Russo. Marie
attended Epiphany School and Cathedral
High School, and then worked for four
years before entering the Sisters of
Charity of New York on September 8,
1941. Sister Michael received a BA in
History from the College of Mount Saint
Vincent and an MA in Education and
Guidance from Fordham University. Sister
also pursued further study at Manhattan
College as well earning NYS permanent
certification in Elementary and Special
Sister Michael spent many years
teaching elementary school and taught
every grade from first to eighth. After
professing vows, she spent several
months at Epiphany School in Manhattan
before being missioned to Our Lady of
Mount Carmel School, also in Manhattan.
Sister Michael spent five years at St.
Mary's in Wappingers Falls and five more
at Blessed Sacrament on Staten Island.
From 1964 through 1967 she taught at
Sts. Peter and Paul School and St.
Barnabas School, both in the Bronx.
Sister Marie Anne then returned to
Staten Island where she taught at Our
Lady Star of the Sea until 1984, and
then moved to St. Bernard's School in
Manhattan where she remained until her
